Reading Specialist

The Role of the Reading Specialist

  • Test, diagnose, and evaluate the need for corrective/remedial reading instruction for students K-8
  • Determine the reading ability of students through informal reading inventories and formal test measures
  • Analyze and use results of the informal reading inventory (test assessment) for planning instruction
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers/parents to design a specialized reading program for a child
  • Meet with individual students or small groups K-8 for instruction
  • Observe referred students in their reading class
  • Contact, meet, and consult with parents regarding reading concerns and development
  • Demonstrate specific reading strategies to teachers for use in their curriculum
  • Aid in the usage of children’s literature as part of theme development in a classroom
